Vision of Geography at Archbishop Benson School

‘With fun and learning, hand in hand, all things are possible.’

‘I can do all things through Him who strengthens me’ (Philippians 4:13)

At Archbishop Benson our Geography curriculum is designed to inspire children’s curiosity about the world we live in. We aim to provide all of our children with rich, hands on opportunities in and out of the classroom environment, from our immediate surroundings to transporting them to the other side of the world.

Throughout the year groups, we aim to equip all children with excellent knowledge and understanding of Cornwall, Britain and abroad; including teaching them about the Earths human and physical processes. We strive to provide them with the opportunities to investigate and enquire and develop a deep understanding of who they are, where they come from, their heritage and what makes Truro and Cornwall so special to us.

We want all children to feel connected and to take care of our planet, so we feel that it is necessary that they share a love of geography and history combined. They receive high quality teaching through a cross-curricular approach in and out of the classroom, allowing them to develop their knowledge and skills with compassion. Closely linked with our school values, we teach the children to ‘Respect’ our planet and explore ways that we can make an immediate change, which in turn has a ripple effect on the wider world.

As the children progress throughout the school, they are equipped with knowledge that builds on prior learning, showing progression year on year. Our curriculum is taught with a cross-curricular key enquiry question at the heart. Pupils will be challenged and inspired to be creative; and encouraged to become active, independent learners They will revisit prior learning in order to build on their skills and develop them further, therefore embedding and deepening their understanding. We ensure that all of our children are able to access carefully planned lessons and that they are will supported in their learning opportunities.
